Bee The Future
“Bee The Future“ is a community beekeeping project to support education and community transformation in Kalongo, Northern Uganda.
Why support this project?
As a result of a twenty-year civil war, Northern Uganda has remained an economically disadvantaged region. It is not widely publicised in world media, and needs support to rebuild itself sustainably. The project team has all the necessary skills, expertise and resilience – and superbly rich, diverse environmental conditions. Modest funding is all that is needed!
Why beekeeping, and will it work?
Research and consultations with the broader community and farmers in Northern Uganda provides evidence of supportive environment needed for the success of beekeeping for quality honey production. Unique and rich flora offering potential for high quality niche product e.g. shea nut honey, candles, propolis, royal jelly.
There are environmental benefits to supporting bee populations – e.g. improved crop yields as a direct effect of increased pollination. Abundant, diverse flora populates the forested, mountainous areas of Northern Uganda, and use of common land is favoured for such initiatives by council and government.
A sizeable, experienced management team is already in place, and only a LOW initial start up cost is needed. Community support has been assured e.g. School entrepreneurship opportunities and willing church collaboration.
NB – More vulnerable groups such as children, older people and disabled people can keep bees.
A straightforward “scaling up” approach will be followed, with support from national experts in the apiculture industry, and an available market exists nationally and internationally.

Hives cost £22 each, so as soon as the project receives enough money for 5-10 hives at a time, these are being purchased and installed, and any contribution will offer proportional benefit.
Hives will be installed on the Safe Haven Christian High School premises and will be maintained by the students with training and oversight from the project team who live within walking distance of the school. The school has 24-hour security, and the students live on the premises, which has capacity for 2000 beehives!
Honey will be sold in the local city, to fetch higher prices than in the local town of Kalongo. 100% of sales proceeds will fund Safe Haven Christian High School.
Safe Haven Christian High School Story
The school was established in 2021 by Dr Anjelo Okot; local community leader, and deputy director of Bank of Uganda… and supported by magnificent fundraising efforts care of Leeds Gateway Church.
The school maintenance costs are currently funded by the parents of students, but it does not yet have running water, reliable power or sufficient textbooks or learning materials.

Despite the challenges, in 2025 the school was granted permission from the Ugandan government education department to become an official GCSE examination centre.
This same year, Safe Haven students were runners up in both the Northern Ugandan Girl’s football tournament, and the boys’ Athletics tournaments.
Finally, the school won the YOFFA award (Youth Future Farmers of Africa) to sponsor training to upgrade the school farm, which has freed up funding to install a lightening arrestor at the school to protect the buildings.
These achievements have attracted national attention and indicate the immense talent and commitment of the youth and communities, that is simply waiting to be realised.
Final note…
Please support this great cause – which is NOT a charity, but an opportunity for the people of Northern Uganda to reclaim their financial independence sustainably, and with dignity.

Vegetable Gardening at Safe Haven Christian High School
We’re thrilled to highlight the success of our School Gardening Project at 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥, Kalongo, Agago District, Northern Uganda.
Safe Haven is the second beneficiary of the 2025 School Gardening Program supported by Healing Hands International and implemented by Youth Future Farmers of Africa (YoFFA Uganda).
At Safe Haven, 95 agricultural education students participated in day’s event and learned;
How to prepare and maintain raised seedbeds.
Making and applying compost for soil enrichment.
Installing and managing drip irrigation systems.
Practicing essential garden management skills.
🪴 Together, they planted eggplants, spinach, and nakati on a 30x25M demonstration plot — learning sustainable gardening and food production first-hand.
This hands-on initiative not only boosted practical agriscience skills but also sparked excitement for self-reliance and sustainability. The school is now planning to expand the project to a larger plot! 💪🏾🌾
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Hats off to the students, teachers, and Mr. Edema the HHI trainer for making this a success!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
